Rugging, Reframed

  • 10 Steps

Rugging is one of the most common decisions horse owners make - and one of the most confusing. Advice varies widely. Temperatures are used as rules. And it can often feel like there is a “right” answer that is easy to get wrong. This course takes a different approach. Instead of focusing on fixed charts and rigid systems, Rugging, Reframed explores how horses actually regulate their own temperature - and how rugs interact with that process. Drawing on science, observation, and real-world experience, the course breaks down: how the winter coat works as a natural insulation system why piloerection (the ability to fluff the coat) is so important how weather, not just temperature, affects thermal comfort what happens under a rug - including heat and moisture build-up and how to recognise subtle signs of comfort or imbalance You’ll also explore the impact of clipping, stabling, age, breed differences, and common management practices - including the widespread habit of over-rugging. Rather than adding more rules, this course helps you remove them. You’ll learn how to: assess your horse using simple, practical checks build a small, flexible rugging system make adjustments based on conditions and develop the confidence to trust your own observations This is not about rugging less or more. It is about rugging thoughtfully. By the end, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what your horse actually needs - and the confidence to make calm, informed decisions without second-guessing. Because when we understand the horse, the answers often become simpler than we expect.
